5 Vehicle Safety and Security Tips

Automatic locks and vehicle alarms can only do so much on their own.

Things happen in life, but that does not mean you should stop proactively assessing your safety and security. What you drive is an important part of your day-to-day. Your truck, car, or SUV gets you from A to B, pulls the horse trailer, carts the kids to baseball practice, and so much more. It is an investment that you rely on constantly.

Here are 5 tips to help keep you—and your GMC vehicle—safe and secure.

  • 1. Utilize OnStar Subscription Service: OnStar Corporation is a subsidiary of General Motors that provides subscription-based communications, in-vehicle security, emergency services, hands-free calling, turn-by-turn navigation, and remote diagnostics systems. This service is meant to help protect your vehicle, and you!
  • 2. Lock Your Doors: If you are not already in the habit of locking your car, truck, or SUV doors when you step outside—or when you are riding inside—now is the time to start. No matter the crime rate where you live, an unlocked car is an easy target.
  • 3. Keep Valuables Out of Sight: If someone walking or cycling by your vehicle can see your iPhone, computer bag, or fancy purse through the window, they may decide they want it. Take the extra 60 seconds and stash expensive belongings in unseen spaces—like the trunk or glove compartment. Better yet, just take anything valuable with you when you leave your car!
  • 4. Park in a Locked Garage Overnight: When you park on the street or in a large parking lot your car is at an increased risk of close encounter vehicle incidents, vandalism, or even falling tree branches due to stormy weather—in spaces with trees, of course! If you must park outside overnight, at minimum, be sure to employ tips 2 and 3 above. Whenever possible, we recommend parking overnight in a closed and locked garage. A vehicle in a garage is “out of sight, out of mind” for most would be thieves or mischief makers.
  • 5. Have a Functioning Car Alarm: You may feel annoyed when you hit the alarm button on your key fob by accident from time to time, but at least you know the car alarm is working! For your safety and the protection of your GMC vehicle, make sure you have a quality car alarm with a sophisticated sensor that requires an actual disturbance. And, by that we mean sounding not just when a person happens to bump into your side door as they load groceries into their own car—but sounding when there is vehicle contact with malicious intent.

Bonus Safety Tip: Whether you are a teenager hitting the roads for the first time or a seasoned driver, every vehicle should have an emergency supply kit located in the trunk. Learn what to include and why.
